Experienced birders and beginners are welcome on all of our field trips. Experienced birders will lead each trip to help you learn where to find and how to identify an exciting variety of bird species. Several trips are planned for each month. Some are local and usually last two to three hours, while others going farther away may be day long trips or even overnighters. They are always a good way to hone your skills and enjoy the company of other birders in the outdoors.
For more information about a field trip or to volunteer to lead a trip please contact our Field Trip organizer, Dave Hogg, dhogg@nrao.edu, 434-974-7592.
Special Note: Most trips require early departure times that will allow us to reach our destinations to observe the birds when they are most active during the early morning hours.
This is a cumulative list from August, 2008 so you can see other potentially good birding sites that have been visited throughout the years. Scroll down to see them all.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
February 4, 2011
A winter visit to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel has in the past provided views of wintering ducks not seen elsewhere along the Eastern Shore. If enough persons are interested, we will plan a trip across the CBBT on Saturday, February 4.
The trip will be led by Mike Iwanik, who will afterward go on up to Chincoteague. Those wishing to make the trip with Mike will be most welcome. However, those wishing to spend only the day will return to Charlottesville, perhaps after looking for wintering ducks at the Dutch Gap Conservation Area near Henricus south of Richmond.
Dave Hogg will coordinate getting security forms mailed to the CBBT. Please contact Dave via e-mail (dhogg@nrao.edu) or phone (434-974-7592) if you are interested in going on this trip. The forms must be in Dave's hands by January 16.
We will plan to meet at the parking lot of the CBBT Authority at 8:45am. This is at the south end of the CBBT adjacent to the toll booths. Dave will try to arrange the carpooling after he has all of the registration forms.

VSO Fall Field Trip to Chincoteague, VA, Sept. 16-18, 2011
Leaders Bill Akers and Jerry Via
Every fall is different at Chinco-teague National Wildlife Refuge, so join us to discover the surprises that await us on this year's annual fall VSO trip! In 2010, 148 species were tallied, includ-ing a great combination of waterfowl, shorebirds and migrating songbirds.
The Refuge Inn on Beach Road in Chincoteague will be the host hotel (800-544-8469 or 757-336-5511), however, the VSO special rate is no longer avail-able for reservations. The Refuge Motor Inn is now totally non-smoking and no pets are allowed.
Check-in time is 4:00PM. After you check in at the hotel on Friday, be sure to pick up a schedule of events for the week-end at the VSO headquarters, located in the Conference room at the far end of the Refuge Inn. The Confer-ence room will be open Friday from 4:00-5:30pm and re-open at 7:30PM.
Meals are on your own. The Refuge Inn offers a complimentary continental breakfast for guests and will open early for us for breakfast at 7:00am. Chinco-teague is known for its fine dining and you will be able to choose from any number of excellent restaurants.
An evening orientation and slide program will be presented on Friday by Jerry Via at 8:00 PM in the Confer-ence room. Jerry and Bill Akers will also give a preview of birds in the area and a synopsis of the field trips for the week-end.
On Saturday, you can select from a variety of field trip experiences: ―Morning Warbler Walk‖ on the Woodland Trail to look for migrating songbirds; ―Motorcade to Assateague Beach,‖ with frequent stops to look at shorebirds; and ―Birding and Biking‖ to explore the wildlife loop (No cars are allowed until 3:00pm, so it's a safe, easy ride. If you don't have a bike, you can rent one at the shop next to the Refuge Inn).
Also, there will be a bus trip to the Wash Flats at 1:00pm on Saturday. This is a restricted area in the refuge and can only be entered with special permission. Permission has been re-quested to disembark twice on the way back like has been done for past years. The shorebirds and raptors are often abundant in this area. The bus has a capacity for 30 people and the minimum number for the trip is 20.
The cost per person is $12 for VSO members and $17 for non-members. If you want to go on this trip, you must make a reservation in advance with Meredith Bell, VSO field trip co-chair, merandlee@cox.net or 804-824-4958. Payment will be made at the registration area when you arrive on Friday. If you are unable to attend after making your reservation, please contact Meredith so that she can open up your space for someone else.
Sunday will repeat many of the field trips from Saturday, so you will have a chance to sample many different areas. Check out time from most of the motels is 11:00AM.
If you are unable to get a room at the Refuge Motor Inn, you may want to try these motels: Best Western (800-553-6117), Sea Hawk (757-336-6527) and Lighthouse (757-336-5091). For addi-tional information about lodging and restaurant options, check out the Chin-coteague town website: www.chincoteaguechamber.com. If you have any questions, contact Meredith Bell, VSO field trip co-chair: 804-824-4958 (cell) or merandlee@cox.net

Panama Birding Trip to Chucanti
Allen Hale has organized a birding adventure to Panama to visit Cerro Chucanti in western Darien Province with Panamanian guide Guido Berguido. The dates for this exploratory trip
are 3-10 April 2011. Guido's company, Advantage Panama, has its base in Gamboa near the entrance to the famous Pipeline Road where we will stay the first two nights. Then we'll travel
the Pan American Highway to Bayano-Torti where the group will proceed by horseback to the foothills of the Serrania Maje and his field station in the primary rainforest, our base for
three nights. A hike to the cloud forest at nearly 5000 feet elevation will likely produce many Darien specialties. Bird watching lowland Darien at the San Francisco Reserve may well give
us looks at species such as Black-headed Tody-Flycatcher, Speckled Mourner, Great Jacamar, Royal Flycatcher, and the elusive Black-crowned Antpitta. The cost of this trip excluding airfare to Panama (about $440) is $1500. Limited to six participants, only two spaces left.

Charlottesville Chrismas Bird Count, Sunday, Dec. 19.
The Charlottesville Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take
place on Sunday, December 19. We will join tens of thousands
of other volunteers around the country who, over a three-week
period, will head out before dawn on a winter day to count the
winter birds. All levels of birders, from beginners to professional
scientists, participate in the count.
These Citizen Scientists are taking action for conservation.
By participating in the National Audubon Society's CBC they
help scientists understand how birds are faring amid unprecedented
environmental challenges. The data they collect informs
the world about the State of Birds, and provides the information
we need to shape their future and ours. This is the 111th Christmas Bird Count.
Each count occurs in a designated circle, 15 miles in diameter, and is organized by a designated "compiler" – Jenny Gaden for the Charlottesville CBC. The Monticello Bird Club sponsors the Charlottesville CBC by paying the $5 fee for all members of the club who participate. Non-members pay their own way. Those interested in participating in the count should let Jenny know (434 293-6275; jgaden@embarqmail.com). If you are an inexperienced birder you will be able to go along with a more experienced person or group. Be prepared: bring hand and foot warmers if it's cold; bring snacks, lunch and water or a hot drink if you expect to get hungry and thirsty; bring a camera to support your case when you spot a rare bird.
And bring enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure. A potluck supper will follow the count at the home of Nancy O'Brien and Francis Fife.

Charlottesville Christmas Count
December 20
On Sunday, December 20, the 2009 Charlottesville Christmas Bird Count (CBC) will take place. We will join tens of thousands of other volunteers around the country who, over a three-week period, will head out before dawn in many cases armed with binoculars, telescopes, checklists, bird guides, cameras, hot coffee and bountiful snacks to spend the day counting birds. Everybody can do it – grandmothers, students, soccer moms and even hockey moms. They will be beginning birders or experienced scientists. All are welcome.
These Citizen Scientists are taking action for conservation. By participating in the National Audubon Society’s CBC they help scientists understand how birds are faring amid unprecedented environmental challenges. The data they collect informs the world about the State of Birds, and provides the information we need to shape their future and ours. This is the 110th Christmas Bird Count.
Last year thousands of volunteers counted nearly 60 million birds across the Americas and beyond. Each count occurs in a designated circle, 15 miles in diameter, and is organized by a designated “compiler” – Jenny Gaden for the Charlottesville CBC.
Those interested in participating in the count should let Jenny know (434 293-6275; jgaden@embarqmail.com). If you are an inexperienced birder you will be able to go along with a more experienced person or group. If you are an experienced birder maybe you would consider starting a new route in a part of the county which is currently not covered. A potluck supper and tally will follow the count that evening.

Christmas Bird Count
Sunday, December 14
On Sunday, December 14, the 84th Charlottesville Christmas Bird Count
(CBC) will take place. We will join tens of thousands of other volunteers
around the country who, over a three-week period, will head out before
dawn in many cases armed with binoculars, telescopes, checklists, bird
guides, cameras, hot coffee and bountiful snacks to spend the day counting
birds. Everybody can do it – grandmothers, students, soccer moms and
even hockey moms. They will be beginning birders or experienced scientists.
All are welcome.
These Citizen Scientists are taking action for conservation. By participating
in the National Audubon Society’s CBC they help scientists understand how
birds are faring amid unprecedented environmental challenges. The data
they collect informs the world about the State of Birds, and provides the
information we need to shape their future and ours. This is the 109th
Christmas Bird Count.
Last year thousands of volunteers counted nearly 60 million birds across the
Americas and beyond. Each count occurs in a designated circle, 15 miles in
diameter, and is organized by a designated “compiler” – Jenny Gaden for
the Charlottesville CBC.
If you are interested in participating in the count please let Jenny know (434-
293-6275; jgaden@embarqmail.com). If you are an inexperienced birder
you will be able to go along with a more experienced person. A potluck
supper and tally will follow the count that evening.
