Topic: Around the Bottom of the World
Speaker: Erwin Bohmfalk
The inaugural speaker for our new 1st Wednesday meetings will be Erwin Bohmfalk, birder extraordinaire from just over the Blue Ridge in Waynesboro. Erwin has presented to the club before, on the birds of South Africa, a country to which he has taken over thirty groups. A professional chemist who spent the bulk of his career with Du Pont, he is also the Chairman Emeritus of the Wildlife Center of Virginia, the owner of the Purple Foot Restaurant in Waynesboro (this is not an advertisement), and a grand speaker.
The October meeting will focus on an epic 67 day, 13,000 mile trip he took around Antarctica on a Russian icebreaker some years ago. “Millions of penguins,” seabirds, whales, seals, glaciers, volcanoes, and more ice in general than you have ever seen will be the stars of the show. As you may well find yourself inexplicably cold during the show, you might want to dress warmly.
As always, we will be meeting at 5:30 at the Brick Oven Restaurant in Rio Hill Shopping Center for an informal supper before we head over to Ivy Creek for the Meeting. Please come and meet or renew acquaintances with Dr. Bohmfalk. This part of the evening will be much warmer.
As tradition dictates, you are invited to our Meet the Speaker pre-meeting dinner at Brick Oven Restaurant, 1966 Rio Hill Center, Charlottesville at 5:30pm.
