Field Trip Leader: Gabriel Mapel
Join Gabriel on a field trip to Dutch Gap Conservation Area south of Richmond. We will carpool from the Giant parking lot to Dutch Gap, which is approximately 1.5 hours from Charlottesville but well worth the drive. We will spend the first 1-2 hours birding at the various viewing platforms along the entrance road, enjoying close views of a wide variety of waterfowl species. We will then take a 2-3 mile hike to visit some more ponds and overlook the James River. Everyone should plan to pack a lunch, and after our hike we can enjoy a picnic lunch at the picnic tables by the visitor center at the trailhead. For those interested we can then visit some nearby ponds that often attract unusual gulls.
