Field Trip Leader: Joe Coppock
The trail is Loft Mountain Loop: https://virginiatrailguide.com/2009/06/03/loft-mountain-loop/
It’s a 2.7-mile loop with about 1 mile of mild to moderate elevation gain (600 ft), and then it is level and downhill from there. We should have a chance to see resident birds and early migrants and the possibility of spotting Ruffed Grouse, which are known to be in the Loft Mountain area and which Joe has encountered twice (though briefly) on this trail. There are also 2 fantastic vantage points with a chance for raptors. Parking is at the Loft Mountain wayside at mile marker 79.5. There is an eatery where food and drinks are served/sold; bathroom facilities are available, as well. The trail begins a hundred yards or so past this on a fire road off Skyline Drive. It’s approximately a one hour drive from Charlottesville, just several miles further than the Pocosin Cabin trail.
