Topic: Birding on the Edge: Between the Tidewater and the Blue Ridge Mountains
Speaker: Evan Spears
Our February speaker is an all-around excellent birder but one who has in particular staked out an area of expertise in a less familiar part of the state. Evan Spears, a VA State Parks employee since 2012, is currently the Park Naturalist at Holliday Lake State Park in Appomattox County. His presentation for next month’s meeting is entitled “Birding on the Edge” and will focus on the birdlife of Southside VA. Situated as it is between the better known and more heavily populated Tidewater and the more dramatic mountainous parts of the state where migrations and breeding populations are perhaps more spectacular, Evan’s turf deserves more attention; and that he can and will provide. He is the Vice-President of the Margaret Watson Bird Club of Prince Edward County, a Regional Coordinator for the second VA Breeding Bird Atlas, and the Bird Lecturer for the local chapter of the VA Master Naturalists. He lives in Farmville and is a major force in birding in general for that part of the state. Evan knows his craft. He also knows Southside VA.
As tradition dictates, you are invited to our Meet the Speaker pre-meeting dinner at Brick Oven Restaurant, 1966 Rio Hill Center, Charlottesville at 5:30pm.
