Ivy Creek Natural Area
The speaker for the March meeting will be Jim Nix, former MBC President. We know Jim as a frequent speaker at meetings over the years, a regular leader of field trips, and a great birding companion in general.
Jim will speak on birding in the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. Whereas the enormous Amazon Basin might be what most think of in connection with that country, the focus tonight will be on the lesser known and drastically altered Atlantic Forest. Less than 10% of its original size, it still is home to a remarkable diversity of species—over 500, with 118 being endemic to that ecosystem. Conservation efforts there are extraordinary–with guides, accommodations, and ongoing scientific research being part of the experience. As for our own tour on March 7th, we could not have a better guide.
As tradition dictates, you are invited to our Meet the Speaker pre-meeting dinner at Brick Oven Restaurant, 1966 Rio Hill Center, Charlottesville at 5:30pm.
