The speaker for the November meeting will be Max Nootbaar. Currently the Vice-President of the Blue Ridge Young Birders’ Club, Max has been birding for a couple of years only but is already proficient to a degree that astonishes, slightly embarrasses, and greatly encourages this longtime member. His ‘spark birds,’ a term unfamiliar to me before a recent email, were a Green Heron and a Marsh Wren, both of which he saw near his home in the early days of his new career as a birdwatcher. The sight of these sparked something in him and we are all the beneficiaries.
This past June with the aid of the Monticello Bird Club as well as through his own efforts, Max attended the Hog Island Audubon Camp in Maine as two former Young Birders have previously done. The absolute highlight of his week there he tells me was spending a day on Eastern Egg Rock with Atlantic Puffins and Arctic Terns. That could be the definition of a day well-spent. Experiencing this week through the eyes and ears of yet another budding expert should make for a great evening. Come welcome Max and share his exciting week.
As tradition dictates, you are invited to our Meet the Speaker pre-meeting dinner at Brick Oven Restaurant, 1966 Rio Hill Center, Charlottesville at 5:30pm.
