Field Trip Leader: Doug Rogers
To avoid conflicting with Dave Hogg’s Saturday Earth Day Field Trip, we are scheduling this one on Sunday. We’ll carpool from Pantops for the approximately 25 minute drive to Pleasant Grove Park in Fluvanna County. The park is located just down the road from Fluvanna County High School.
If you heard our January 2016 MBC meeting speaker, Walter Hussey, you learned of his promethean efforts to reconfigure and “renaturalize” this longtime pastureland into native-planted meadowland supporting a rich diversity of wildlife. Doug led our first field trip there last April and will captain this year’s trip as well. We will cover roughly two miles of trail roundtrip, (which involves some ups and downs and a short plank walk across a creek), through varied habitats, down to a scrubby floodplain along the Rivanna River. We should expect to see migrants, year-round residents and some surprises. Several Prairie Warblers atop scrubby pines serenaded us at the outset of last year’s visit; we do hope they will return to greet us this April.
